Local companies rank on Deloitte's annual list

Related Special Reports

More than a dozen locally based companies appeared on Deloitte's 2012 Technology Fast 500, a ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology companies in North America.

Deloitte & Touche LLP's list is based on percentage of fiscal-year revenue growth from 2007 to 2011.

The highest-ranked local company was Optimer Pharmaceuticals Inc. (No. 15), which grew 18,798 percent during that period.

Maxwell Technologies Inc., a developer and manufacturer of ultracapacitor-based energy storage products, ranked No. 413. Total company sales grew by 177 percent from 2007 to 2011, and ultracapacitor sales grew by more than 500 percent during that period.

The No. 1 company on the list was Palo Alto-based Tesla Motors, which grew a whopping 279,684 percent during that time.

"Global demand for greener, more efficient, electrical energy storage and power delivery solutions is driving demand for Maxwell's ultracapacitor products in micro hybrid automobiles, hybrid and electric transit vehicles, wind turbines, backup power systems and many other transportation and industrial applications," said David Schramm, Maxwell's president and CEO.

Other locally based companies on the list include Neurocrine Biosciences Inc. (No. 30), ServiceNow (No. 33), Trius Therapeutics (No. 42), Lpath Inc. (No. 60), PayLease LLC (No. 77), Dexcom Inc.
