President of Good & Roberts influencing more than just those in his industry

Robb Good, president of Good & Roberts Inc., is a busy man. Aside from running the day-to-day operations at the Vista-based general contracting firm, he also is helping a startup company get off the ground and helping underprivileged youth.

At Good & Roberts Inc., he helps lead 60 employees. Good said that even though the construction industry has been deeply impacted by the economy, the business has grown through the last year by “staying true to our core values and by not resorting to tactics that compromise our integrity or reputation.”

Most of the work the company does is complex tenant improvements for life sciences, technology and manufacturing firms.

“Since most of these customers have significant [research and development] or defense-related components, they are considered confidential and we are not allowed to disclose details on them,” Good said about ongoing construction projects.

However, he could say that Good & Roberts has recently completed large-scale tenant improvements for Genoptix, Prometheus and Dexcom.

“We also just completed the design and installation of the manufacturing tool line for the new Soitec Solar plant in Rancho Bernardo,” he added.

In 2011, Good & Roberts won general contractor of the year from the American Subcontractors Association.

“I am really not interested in winning popularity contests or paying for a plaque on the wall,” Good said. “The best reward we gain is a repeat customer, and that will always be our No. 1 focus.”

Approximately 90 percent of the general contractor’s work comes from recurring clients.

Moving forward, Good said the firm has a “healthy” backlog of potential projects moving into next year and “pending any financial meltdown of the economy, it appears that 2013 will be one of our best years since 2007.”

Aside from his full-time job, Good is spending roughly 16 hours a week helping a startup technology company, which will be releasing its first product in April 2013.

“Most of the employees are in their 20s or college interns,” he said. “I am helping them with strategy, completing a round of venture financing and directly mentoring the CEO.”

The president of Good & Roberts is also helping other youth, but in a different way.

For the last several years, he has sponsored underprivileged youth and helped them obtain college degrees, earn technical certificates and get jobs that help them become better citizens and raise their standard of living.

“When it comes to charity and volunteering, I have a different perspective,” Good said. “I believe in giving people a hand up and not a handout.”

He said his role requires a certain amount of mentoring and that he can adjust his involvement as necessary to ensure positive outcomes.

“It is not always successful, but when it is, it’s much more rewarding than writing a check,” Good said. “Luckily I have seen much more success than failures.”

He added that for people to be influential, they need to be good leaders and good listeners.

“They need to be thinking ahead and looking at the big picture and trends that are shaping our society and their industry,” he explained. “This also requires making tough and unpopular decisions if they are in the long-term best interest of the organization and its people.”
