Seeing possibilities in every precious resource equals sustainability

Related Special Reports

At Balfour Beatty Construction, we believe at the heart of a sustainable business lies the creation, care, and responsible use of assets -- whether those assets be people or time, capital investment, land use or water, we must use those resources responsibly. To help guide us through our commitment of becoming, and maintaining, a sustainable business we have developed a comprehensive “Sustainability Road Map” which outlines our sustainability vision and is a balance of concern for profitable markets, environmental limits and healthy communities. To that end, we have developed a Sustainability Roadmap with specific goals and objects that will help us on our journey to find sustainability solutions in every precious resource we use.

Profitable markets
Our profitable markets objectives involve utilizing the most advanced and innovative tools that will help us deliver the most cost and energy efficient buildings possible to our clients, within their budget. Strategies including Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Green Building Certification, Rapid Energy Modeling, Measurement and Verification as well as Building Information Modeling (BIM) are utilized to achieve these goals. This virtual design and construction process allows us to reduce inefficiencies and discover resource savings before the building process begins -- saving the owner money both in the short and long term. It’s important to note that building construction costs are only a small part of the lifetime owner and operation expenses. We utilize our experience and service excellence to develop strategic plans for clients that are proven to reduce overall lifetime ownership costs.

Environmental limits
Our environmental limits objectives advocate the use of materials that reduce our carbon footprint, direct water and energy usage as well as embodied energy and water in the projects we build. We use responsible forested materials and materials with recycled content whenever possible. We strive to reduce our waste, lifecycle cost impacts and improve the built environment by our actions and leave the world better than we found it.

Healthy communities
Our healthy communities objectives include the development of volunteer opportunities for our employees and are focused on giving back to the communities where we build. A few examples of organizations that have benefited from our volunteer base include Ronald McDonald House of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Sharefest Annual Workday Program-Los Angeles, Tustin Public Schools Foundation (Dinosaur Dash), Center for Green Schools at the United States Green Building Council (Green Apple Day of Service) and many other client based charities. Other objectives also focus on recruiting and retaining top talent in the industry that specialize in sustainability. These individuals will help our clients achieve and exceed their goals.

Our resources are precious, and we have an action plan in place to build a better world using less of them.
