"I've jumped out of airplanes, and hang-glided off the cliffs at Torrey Pines," said Pennington. "I also ride dressage on my horse in Elfin Forest."
Between free-falls and other adventures, Pennington serves as president of Radiant Technologies, an international company based in San Diego that helps companies select, purchase and implement ERP/MRP and CRM business management software. She oversees the company's operations, software sales and implementation, and helps clients around the globe select, purchase and implement business management software. "Every day, we come in and help people realize their business dreams, and I love that," she said.
Pennington capitalizes on her knack for helping since receiving a degree from Champlain College in Vermont, and an Executive MBA degree at San Diego State University. Pennington is also a CPA licensed in the state of Vermont. A strategic executive, she has focused most of her career on assisting organizations with selecting, developing and implementing financial systems, strategies and processes that provide visibility and control over operations and finance.
"In my early college years, I pursued majors in programming, accounting and business, and then worked for a regional CPA firm when I got out of college," she said. "Many of our clients were just learning how to leverage computer systems to track operations, and I was very good at helping them move their businesses forward with the proper utilization of their software. While it was not a strategic career decision, I became known as an expert in leveraging business systems to gain operational efficiencies and financial visibility of key business drivers."
For women in particular, Pennington said, "There was a period of time when women were expected to walk away from their femininity to make it in the business world. But I've found that when we embrace our intuition, compassion, and intellect, we can be very powerful. We shouldn't try to cut ourselves off from our feminine qualities. While women once thought they had to be more like men to be successful, I have found that our best success in business and life comes when we always behave with personal and professional integrity. Being a woman is not in any way a barrier in this day and age. In fact, it can be an advantage."
Pennington worked as a business consultant for several years in Vermont, then New York, before moving to San Diego 17 years ago. In 2008, she founded Pennington & Associates, a software and content company that developed tools for cost-effective compliance with the federal Sarbanes-Oxley accounting fraud-prevention act. She also is a board member of San Diego-based Business Legacy Mentoring Program, where she applies her knowledge to help privately held business families focus on leveraging their life's work to the betterment of society and leave a legacy behind.
"As a serial entrepreneur, I've worked with a lot of startups, especially in San Diego," she said. "At Radiant, we focus on small to medium-size business, typically between $3 million and $250 million in revenue, primarily in the manufacturing distribution, professional services, and clean-technology sectors. I spend the bulk of my time running the operations of the business and I look through the customer's lens to gain insight and visibility into their systems to leverage them better."
Radiant Technologies has partnered with companies all around the world to improve their business processes. "Most of our executive team have worked in or run other companies. We truly partner very well with our clients and focus on bringing them value each and every day," Pennington said.
"We implement systems that help growing companies continue to expand while gaining visibility and control. One clean-tech company we partnered with doubled their revenue in 12 months and, because our business software automated so much of their operations, they were able to achieve this growth without adding any internal staff during their hyper-growth. This company was also able to provide better customer service and shortening their manufacturing cycle because of the streamlined operations."
Pennington helps other firms get off the ground through Radiant Technologies' sponsorship of Chairmen's RoundTable, a nonprofit volunteer organization of successful CEOs. Members mentor San Diego County businesspeople on how to manage and grow their businesses as a way of giving back to the community. Radiant Technologies also is well-known around San Diego and the region for giving back through Rady Children's Hospital, Corazon de Vida Foundation, which funds orphanages in Tijuana.
"One of the things I love about Radiant Technologies is we have an amazing corporate culture and a major focus on giving back," Pennington said, "We find ways to take a portion of what we do and give back to the community. At the end of the day, what is important to me is helping others, giving back, and making a difference."
