IFMA San Diego: A leader in sustainability

Related Special Reports

The International Facilities Management Association, San Diego Chapter (IFMA San Diego) is a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the performance and professional growth of members through networking, education and promoting the practice of facilities management. The integration of sustainability into the facility management process is a natural fit. Facility management professionals have long been concerned with and engaged in the environmental aspects of the facilities they operate, especially from the perspective of energy conservation and high-performance buildings.

Facility professionals are in the position to be environmental stewards of the physical workplace with the ability to upgrade a building's equipment and daily operations through sustainable initiatives and management strategies. IFMA's sustainability resources and programs help develop and implement plans to take the next step towards implementing environmentally friendly and cost-saving practices into daily operations.

“IFMA San Diego is dedicated to environmental sustainability primarily for operations and maintenance of existing buildings,” said Carol Whitmore, IFMA San Diego sustainability co-chair. “IFMA facilities managers have qualified resources for making educated decisions pertaining to energy savings, environmental health and governance of building standards.”

IFMA Partners with ENERGY STAR
IFMA’s ENERGY STAR Challenge is a tool for facility managers to benchmark their buildings, save energy and build a detailed database to evaluate energy costs in various cities across the United States. This free database — housed on the Environmental Protection Agency's website — helps facility managers set realistic goals, demonstrating their commitment to energy efficiency and compliance with mandatory reporting initiatives.

IFMA’s sustainability committee challenges its member companies to reduce their buildings’ annual energy consumption by 15 percent during the 12 months leading up to World Workplace in October 2013. Chapters with the greatest number of participating facilities and councils which have the most non-ratable facilities will be recognized during the event.
