Component West

Most of the thousands of people who pass through San Diego International Airport's expanded Terminal 2 won't have a clue about the 2 million square feet of gypsum wallboard one subcontractor installed all around them.

But that's OK with Bob Perricone, vice president of Component West, a wholly owned subsidiary of Component Assembly Systems Inc., one of the largest wall and ceiling contractors in the country.

"One of the things we pride ourselves on is if our work is perfect, nobody even notices it. People just walk right by. It looks like everything else you pass inside a building," said Perricone, whose San Diego regional office is responsible for the massive amounts of sheetrock in virtually every wall, ceiling, fascia, column and soffit of Terminal 2.

"It's a notable project in that it's one that the public will see and utilize. Much of our work is hidden and people will never see it. Our task was to produce painted walls and a reinforced substrate for tile or stone."

One of the most challenging aspects of the expansion for Component West is called "the football," a 150-foot pigskin-shaped ceiling feature about 60 feet above the concessions area, where it will serve as a dramatic focal point. The firm installed all of its fascia and soffits.

While its New York-based parent company has been in business since 1963, the San Diego office was established four years ago and has been busy since day one. "We work it pretty hard," Perricone said. "We're also doing the framing and drywall at the Camp Pendleton Hospital Replacement Project, which is higher in dollar volume. But the airport is a very large, high-visibility commercial project for us."

Component West Inc. appreciates the opportunity to help make Terminal 2 an impressive facility for everyone who transits through it or works there:

"First and foremost, we'd like to thank the Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture (which handles the Phase 1 contract of the terminal expansion) for giving us the opportunity to be involved on the project. They've been an absolute joy to work with. They're definitely enhancing the San Diego skyline and San Diego in general by being able to produce this project in a timely fashion, and just making San Diego a better place to live."
