Three high profile projects designed by RJC Architects -- John William Finn Hall, the U.S. Navy Resources Center and the San Diego County Operations Center -- recently received top honors for sustainability and overall design at the San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter American Public Works Association (APWA) annual award luncheon.
The three “Project of the Year” awards announced at the May 9 event included:
*The U.S. Navy Human Resources Services Center, located at MCAS Miramar, was named “Project of the Year” in the Sustainable/Green Category, $6 to $25 million. This LEED Platinum certified structure had previously been named as the Best Public Building in the AGC Build San Diego program. Straub Construction worked with RJC Architects on the project.
*John Finn Hall at U.S. Naval Base, Coronado, was named Project of the Year in the Structures Category, $25 to $75 million. Consisting of two seven-story residential towers, this LEED Gold certified building is part of the Navy’s Homeport Ashore initiative and previously won a National DBIA Award as “Best Commercial Project” and a Gold Nugget Award from the Pacific Coast Builders Conference. RJC Architects worked with Joseph Wong Design Associates and Hensel Phelps was the design/build team.
*The San Diego County Operations Center -- consisting of four 150,000-square-feet, four-story public administration buildings and a conference/dining center -- was named as an Outstanding Project in the Sustainable/Green Category, over $75 million. Carefully designed to boost energy savings, water efficiency and the stewardship of natural resources, this LEED Platinum certified project was also recently lauded as “Best Public Building” by California Center for Sustainable Energy and received the “People’s Choice Orchid Award” in the San Diego Orchids and Onions program. RJC Architects worked on the public private partnership with Lowe Enterprises and the builder was Suffolk-Roel.
