Troutman Sanders is an internationally recognized firm with more than 600 lawyers and offices located throughout the United States and China. The San Diego practice covers a broad range of services including complex commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, insurance litigation, and real estate and business transactions, led by Managing Partner Michael J. Whitton, named a Transcript 10 Top Attorneys finalist.
Whitton’s practice is diverse. He advises and counsels public and private companies, real estate investment trusts, and lending and financial institutions on a variety of sophisticated and complex real estate and business transactions throughout the country. His practice focuses on large-scale joint ventures, portfolio acquisitions, real estate development, and debt and equity financing and restructuring. He is also known as one of the top golf and resort lawyers in the country.
A burgeoning area of growth for Troutman Sanders’ San Diego office is the government contract sector, where the firm — under Whitton’s leadership — has begun to see tremendous success.
"San Diego County is one of the largest military regions in the country,” said Whitton, a graduate of San Diego’s esteemed LEAD program, which gave him a deeper understanding of the military’s impact on private sector business in the region. "Even given potential Department of Defense budget cuts, San Diego’s military presence will continue to grow with the DoD’s decision to relocate military assets and personnel to the region in the coming years. This will surely provide new and expanded business opportunities for private sector companies providing goods and services to the military, and Troutman Sanders is uniquely positioned to serve these companies."
The firm’s government contracts practice bookends the country with a strong presence in Washington, D.C., Virginia Beach and San Diego. Its representation in this sector includes negotiation of bids, prime/sub contracts, and teaming arrangements; assisting with certifications and regulatory compliance; pursuing bid protests and appeals; and defending false claims and white collar crimes.
The firm specializes in representing financial institutions, small cap public companies, sophisticated private companies, insurance companies and energy companies. In fact, it found its beginnings over a century ago serving energy clients focused on traditional power generation. Today, Troutman Sanders is also at the forefront of representing clients in the development and growth of renewable energy.
Whitton is extremely proud of the firm’s history in San Diego. The office traces its roots back to 1973, the year the litigation boutique of Miller, Boyko and Bell was founded. That firm merged in 1999 and was operated as Ross, Dixon & Bell, LLP until the merger with Troutman Sanders in January 2009. In 2010, the San Diego office relocated to Del Mar to position itself for growth among its clients and competitors. The firm, as a whole, continues to grow as well, recording a record year for revenue and profit in 2011, and recently opening an office in Beijing, China.
"It’s an exciting time to be a part of Troutman Sanders and the San Diego office,” Whitton said. "It has been fun to see how our local practices have grown with the resources and diverse skill sets of an international firm. I have also enjoyed working with new partners who have joined our team since the merger and collaborating with them on shaping the firm’s growth in California. I find that Troutman is a place where input is welcomed and involvement has a material impact."
