The Damiani Law Group APC congratulates Associate Andrew Hillier for his recent selection by The Daily Transcript as one of San Diego’s top attorneys for 2014. In its July 30 edition, SDDT recognized Mr. Hillier for his outstanding work in the criminal defense field. Annually, the Transcript organizes a peer-voting process to determine the best lawyers in private, corporate, academic and government practice in San Diego County.
Though more than 900 lawyers were nominated for this award, Mr. Hillier’s peers and colleagues selected him as one of the 10 best attorneys in the area of criminal defense. The Damiani Law Group extends its sincerest congratulations to Mr. Hillier for this distinguished achievement.
The Damiani Law Group implements unique tactics to successfully guide individual and corporate clients through difficult, complex, white-collar criminal and employment matters. Led by founder Lisa J. Damiani, Damiani Law Group is dedicated to excellence and committed to providing superior service to clients. Prior to starting the firm in 2000, Ms. Damiani, as a member of an international law firm, defended those accused of crimes and defended companies sued in employment, business, government contracts and product liability litigation cases.
In July 2012, Damiani Law Group was thrust into the national spotlight as the firm representing the family of James Holmes, who was charged with the movie theater killings in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead and wounded 58 others. Over many years, Damiani Law Group was involved in the complex and lengthy cases stemming from conflict of interest accusations against Trustees of the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System. In 2010, Damiani Law Group obtained a dismissal for its client, former Trustee Sharon Wilkinson, in the criminal case of People of the State of California v. Cathy Lexin, et al., after the California Supreme Court, in a unanimous opinion, reversed the Court of Appeal and ordered the charges be dismissed. In 2012, the firm represented Ms. Wilkinson as a plaintiff against the city of San Diego to recoup her legal fees in defending that criminal case. On Oct. 4, 2012, the firm won the trial, resulting in a $5.4 million verdict against the city.
Most recently, Mr. Hillier played a vital role in exonerating Judy Hayman, a San Diego woman falsely accused of being a fugitive after escaping from a Michigan prison. Ms. Hayman was arrested on a 30-year-old warrant and threatened with extradition back to a Michigan jail. Though extradition is rarely successfully challenged, the Damiani Law Group worked quickly to make sure justice was served. Mr. Hillier, through a mixture of ingenuity and perseverance, was able to obtain exculpatory evidence that cleared Ms. Hayman. Thanks to Mr. Hillier and the Damiani Law Group, all charges were dropped. She is now a free woman and no longer has to fear imprisonment.
