  • Incentives promote green building

A handful of green-inspired projects and programs are in the works in East County, several aiming to refurbish properties devastated by the October 2003 wildfires.

  • Trolley Green Line closes gap in San Diego system

If a person living in La Mesa, El Cajon, or Santee wished to take the trolley to Qualcomm stadium or Fashion Valley, it would mean a trip through downtown San Diego, a more than 5 minute wait at a transfer station and an additional 10 to 15 minute ride. That is until this past July when the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) opened its Green Line to the public.

  • East County has lowest prices, smallest share of affordable-housing development

Affordable-housing development in East County has been modest lately. The region's four municipalities -- which were allocated the smallest share of low- and very-low income units in the San Diego Association of Governments' recent regional housing needs assessment -- boast several affordable-housing projects, but significantly fewer than other cities in the county.

  • New casino compacts officially address county's land-use concerns

Eastern areas of the county will soon see a growing number of new casinos on Indian reservations.

  • Santee's success story continues to unfold

Santee has checked a number of significant projects off its development to-do list in the last couple years. Examples include the highly successful Trolley Square mall and the 80,000-square-foot regional office for the Hartford Insurance Co. There's no denying Santee is gaining ground in its quest to transform Town Center, its downtown district, into a diverse and vibrant focal point that will lure people to live, work and play. But there's more work to be done. In the coming months, Santee will forge ahead with a variety of key commercial, residential, mixed-use and other projects.

  • Evolving Cuyamaca campus benefits current and future students

As the district it serves continues to grow, Cuyamaca College has kept pace with record growth of its own. Student enrollment at the El Cajon school, which along with Grossmont College forms the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, has soared to 8,000. To accommodate this growth, new buildings are sprouting up on campus and others are undergoing major renovations.
