Roche AG says it will build a U.S. plant to make more of its anti-bird flu drug Tamiflu, but that promise failed to tamp growing international pressure on the Swiss drug giant to ease its monopoly grip on the drug.   

San Diego attorneys Eric Kremer and Carmela Dunn Nicholas of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP advised Biosite Inc. (Nasdaq: BSTE) in its $28.2 million acquisition of approximately 26 usable acres at the Fenton Technology Park in the Miramar area of San Diego. The negotiation of the purchase documentation and the title due diligence along with the negotiation and documentation of the design and construction contracts were also completed by Pillsbury, working closely with Biosite's in-house facilities, finance and legal departments.   

An Idaho postal worker who suffered a heart attack had a buildup of plaque in his arteries that was not caused by the since-withdrawn painkiller Vioxx, a doctor testified Tuesday for the drug's maker in a product liability trial.   

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Johnson & Johnson's chief financial officer on Tuesday said the company is considering alternatives to its planned acquisition of troubled heart device maker Guidant Corp. as the health care company posted a 12 percent jump in third-quarter profit amid strong overseas sales.   

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - The two pharmaceutical companies who make the withdrawn drug Tysabri said Monday they had found no new cases of a rare brain disease among nearly 1,500 people who took the suspended drug to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.   

Carlsbad-based Invitrogen Corp. (Nasdaq: IVGN, News) , a maker of genomics research equipment, said Thursday that an appeals court ruled in its favor in a patent infringement case brought against Stratagene Inc. (Nasdaq: STGN, News)   

Pfizer Inc. won a significant victory on Wednesday when a British judge upheld a key patent covering its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor in the United Kingdom but the medication still faces a similar yet more important case in the United States.   

Eisai Co. Ltd. and TorreyPines Therapeutics Inc. jointly announced Tuesday the signing of a new research agreement that focuses on the discovery of genes responsible for late onset Alzheimer's disease.    

San Diego-based Biosite Inc. (Nasdaq: BSTE, News) announced Friday that it has increased the share reserve for its 2002 Nonqualified Stock Incentive Plan by 400,000 shares. The company also modified the plan to allow for the grant of inducement stock awards to officers in accordance with applicable Nasdaq rules.   

Reinforcing the strong performance in the capital markets in the third quarter, the biotech industry raised almost $10 billion in financings and partnering, according to Burrill & Co.'s Quarterly Biotechnology Report, which tracks the ongoing performance of the biotechnology industry.   

Biotech stocks surged Friday to 52-week highs, with several major players up on the day, led by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., which jumped on a positive initiation of analyst coverage.   

Genentech Inc. said Wednesday that the U.S. Patent Office rejected one of its key antibody development patents, putting substantial future license revenue at risk.   

The headquarters for stem cell research may not be headed here, but San Diego is still positioned to play a major role in the development of the new technology. And the local legal community is preparing to play its part.   

From the outside, it looks like any other government vehicle.   

Above all else, John Bauhs credits a drug for helping him stop drinking -- a story line some alcoholics, doctors and drug companies hope will become more common as new treatment options emerge.   

Millions of people with diabetes may have an alternative to some or all of their daily needles if the government adopts an advisory panel's recommendation to approve the first insulin that can be inhaled.   

A comprehensive bill that would overhaul U.S. patent law has ignited the passions of many, from the individual inventor to big corporations.   

They're being bred now by the millions, the mutants, created to carry the ghastliest of diseases for the benefit of the human race.
