EGCA Foundation, the charitable arm of the local Engineering & General Contractors Association, has raised more than $180,000.00 in scholarship funds from its contractor and affiliate members -- the companies who build our roads and underground infrastructure: utility, water and sewer lines.
Founded by family-owned engineering contractors in 1952, the Engineering and General Contractors Association (EGCA) has been a San Diego force for six decades. EGCA represents general engineering contractors in San Diego County -- those doing sewer, water, storm drains, utilities (wet and dry), grading paving, asphalt, concrete and road building for public and private work throughout San Diego County and beyond.
The alarm bells are sounding; the canary has fainted; and it looks like asphalt prices are strapped to a Saturn rocket -- more than doubling in the last two years. It is a supply crisis whose roots can be traced to decades of short-sighted decisions at a myriad of government levels.
"Everyone wants cleaner air, for ourselves, for our children and grandchildren," said Engineering & General Contractors Association Board Member Mike Shaw of Perry & Shaw, based in El Cajon. "But there is a Category Five challenge bearing down on the construction industry. It can make obsolete 90 percent of the equipment in use today. The biggest asset most construction companies have is their equipment, and much of that is about to become worthless."
