In celebration of YWCA San Diego's 100th anniversary, this special report spotlights the YWCA's Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

  • YWCA's centennial celebration culminates with Walk A Mile Event

The year-long commemoration of the YWCA's 100th anniversary is culminating with an unusual event called Walk A Mile in Her Shoes. Coinciding with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is held every October, this event will involve hundreds of men who will make their way through downtown San Diego carrying signs to raise awareness about domestic violence. They will be in business suits, in uniforms, in T-shirts and shorts, in polos and jeans - and in high heels!

  • YWCA of San Diego needs community support to maintain critical services for women, children

As economic woes multiply, YWCA has seen a rise in domestic violence incidents and an increase in the number of calls to the domestic violence hot line. That brave woman who has finally made the courageous decision to leave her perpetrator will not leave if faced with job shortages, lack of housing, a failing economy and no options. Violence in San Diego County homes has already increased as families struggle to meet their mortgage or rent payments and pay the bills. Does she stick it out in the hopes that the violence subsides? It rarely does. Does she stay and deal with the familiar rather than go into the unknown? History tells us that, over time, domestic violence becomes more frequent and more severe.

  • YWCA of San Diego County -- Pioneering services for battered women and children

In 1978, the YWCA was the first organization in San Diego County to establish services for battered women and their children. As the oldest social service organization for women and children in San Diego County, the YWCA of San Diego County has contributed to the well-being and safety of countless women, children and families. For more than 100 years, the YWCA has worked to improve our community by increasing the status of women, girls and families, and promoting economic justice.
