San Diego County has a new champion to brag about. Three construction craft champions represented Associated Builders and Contractors of San Diego at the ABC National Craft Championships, held at the ABC National Education Conference & Expo earlier this year in San Antonio. This prestigious competition brings together the top apprentices and trainees in the country who vie to be named No. 1 in each of 13 trades.
Sherry Yarbrough, executive director of the Associated Builders and Contractors Apprenticeship Training Trust, was selected as a recipient of the prestigious YWCA Tribute to Women & Industry (TWIN) Award. The TWIN Award recognizes successful women executives throughout the United States for their outstanding achievements and positive contributions to their organizations. Recipients were honored at the 32nd Annual TWIN Awards luncheon held in June.
Student satisfaction is the reason why Gary Wood, who was named the 2011 recipient of the ABC San Diego Apprenticeship Training Trust Instructor of the Year award, said he’s honored by this recognition.
Years of dedication and hard work have paid off for apprentices and craft trainees who graduated with their apprenticeship and journeyman certificates in the Class of 2011 from the Associated Builders and Contractors Apprenticeship Training program.
Anniversaries present a natural opportunity for reflection. On the occasion of the ABC San Diego Apprenticeship Training Trust’s (SDTT) 25th anniversary, former board of trustees chairpersons Dave Perkins and Donna Bechthold got together for lunch with current SDTT board chairman Matt Harbin and Executive Director Sherry Yarbrough to look back and make a few predictions about the future.
Thousands of students have received training from the Apprenticeship Training Trust program since its modest beginnings in the 1980s. As the program celebrates its 25th anniversary, its true success is the achievement of students who have developed satisfying careers, including leadership roles, in the construction industry.
Thirty-five years ago, an unheralded event took place that became a game changer for the San Diego area construction industry. California’s secretary of state accepted, endorsed and filed incorporation papers for Associated Builders and Contractors of San Diego Inc. (ABC San Diego). On Sep. 13, 1976, ABC’s national board of directors granted the fledgling construction group formal chapter status.
The reviews are in, and they are unanimous. The Naval Engineering Facilities Command (NAVFAC) San Diego training program is an overwhelming success, thanks to its innovative partnership with the ABC San Diego Apprenticeship Training Trust (SDTT).
In a time of high unemployment, no group has more difficulty in finding work than our nation’s military veterans. Each year in California, 30,000 veterans complete their military service, but only 25 percent of them find civilian employment.
Like at so many campuses this month, it was back to school time at North County Trade Tech High School. The Class of 2012 represents a significant milestone for this program. Trade Tech will graduate its first senior class since becoming a reality in 2008. In the 2011-2012 school year, it will serve 160 to 180 students.
