Law school programs offer model for reducing prison population, cutting costs of incarceration

The cost of incarcerating California prisoners nearly doubled in the past decade, reaching more than $47,000 per inmate per year for fiscal year 2008-2009. Last year the state began returning low-level offenders to their home counties, under a program known as realignment, in an attempt to reduce the state’s prison spending.

Politicizing judicial independence and liberty

Editor’s note: Gov. Rick Perry recently proposed for a Constitutional Amendment to set term limits on Supreme Court justices (for 18 years, staggered every 2 years). We asked a local expert on constitutional law if Supreme Court justices should be given term limits, and if not, what are the problems with such a proposal.

Local law schools seek to arm students with real world experience

Law schools can’t employ students, but San Diego schools of law have developed programs and clinics to ensure their graduates have the practical skills and experience that give them a competitive edge in an evolving and increasingly demanding legal field. Some programs are teaching students how to create policy while others offer the opportunity to learn while providing pro bono legal services to startup tech companies, small businesses or nonprofits that might not otherwise have the resources to hire an attorney.

House OKs student loan bill, ignores veto threat

WASHINGTON — Republicans defied a veto threat and the House voted Friday to prevent federal loan costs from doubling for millions of college students. The vote gave the GOP a momentary election-year triumph on a bill that has become enmeshed in partisan battles over the economy, women's issues and President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Good work if you can get it:

The job market for new law school graduates may be seeing small gains, but the competition is fierce, according to local legal professionals. It’s not enough to graduate from law school and pass the state bar exam. The few entry-level positions available at local law firms are being filled by those with the best connections and the highest grade-point averages from top-ranked law schools.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law programs grow to serve more San Diegans

Law Week is an ideal time to reflect on the many benefits a law school can bring to a community. At Thomas Jefferson School of Law in the revitalized East Village district of downtown San Diego, we continue to expand our academic programming to serve the needs of our more than 1,000 students from across the nation, as well as the needs of underserved members of the San Diego community.
