SDSU to name center after Alpert

San Diego State University is renaming its City Heights Center at 4283 El Cajon Boulevard the "Dede Alpert Center for Community Engagement." The university will hold a dedication ceremony Dec. 15 at 10:30 a.m.

Alpert served 14 years in the state Assembly and Senate before retiring this year. The center opened in 2000 and is owned and operated by the SDSU Foundation. It houses programs run by university faculty and staff designed to improve educational resources in the community, including the City Heights Educational Cooperative, a literacy center, computer labs, a counseling center and a nonprofit children's bookstore.

U.S. Rep. Susan Davis, D-San Diego; State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell; SDSU President Stephen L. Weber and Alpert will speak during the ceremony.
