On the Agenda: Fall business calendar hits full stride

Happy November! As the countdown to Turkey Day begins, real estate summits, sports conferences and an intellectual property panel remind us to be thankful for America’s Finest City and all the events it has to offer. And don't forget to vote on Tuesday.

The University of San Diego Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate’s second annual Women in Real Estate Conference will be at the USD Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on Monday. The event highlights successful women in the real estate industry regionally, nationally and internationally. This year’s speakers are Leanne Lachman, president of Lachman Associates, and Lydia Jacobs-Horton, the director of Proctor & Gamble’s Global Facilities & Real Estate Organization. The conference will be moderated by Gail Goldberg, the executive director of the Urban Land Institute in Los Angeles, and runs from 7 to 10 a.m. at 5990 Alcala Park.

Rady Children's Hospital's 17th Annual Professionals Symposium for insurance, legal and financial planning professionals is being held at the Hyatt Regency LaJolla on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Eric A. Manterfield, partner at Krieg DeVault LLP, will speak about “Getting the Family Business Off the Dime: How to Get Them Started on Estate and Succession Planning,” and Greg McCann from Stetson University and McCann & Associates, will present on “OMG! Generational Differences: Perplexing or a Positive?” Continuing education credit is available and a networking reception follows the program at 5:30 p.m., also at the Hyatt on 3777 La Jolla Village Drive.

A Military and Commercial Microgrids Summit comes to Del Mar on Wednesday, featuring a detailed analysis of the wants, needs and key business requirements of microgrid customers at military bases and facilities, remote communities, campuses, airports and hospitals. The conference and showcase runs Wednesday through Friday at the Del Mar Hilton on 15575 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

Hometown celebrity Bruce “Bink” Binkowski, 13-year announcer for the San Diego Padres, 23-season public address announcer for the Chargers and 20-year voice of San Diego State University Aztec football and basketball, will do what he does best and speak at the San Diego Employers Association’s Strategic Leadership Series. Binkowski, the executive director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association, will discuss how he survived working for five sports franchises in six years, and his motivation to succeed, at the Wednesday event at Qualcomm Stadium. The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and runs until 6:30 p.m. at 9449 Friars Road.

The Maritime Alliance's annual Maritime Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony and the fourth annual Blue Tech and Blue Economy Summit are being held in conjunction at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier on Wednesday. The summit runs from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will address opportunities and innovations surrounding sustainable development of ocean resources. The dinner ceremony will follow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Port Pavilion on 1000 N. Harbor Drive.

Connect presents “Business Aspects of Patents: A Primer for the Non-Patent Lawyer” on Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon. The program will focus on the role key business factors play in capturing, managing and exploiting the intellectual property of the company. The session will be held at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, at 12255 El Camino Real, Suite 300.

Law firm Higgs Fletcher & Mack has formed a Hotel, Restaurants and Tourism group, and launched a complimentary education series. The first Lunchtime Happy Hour Education Series discussion will be on Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Higgs Fletcher & Mack office on 401 W. A St., Suite 2600. The roundtable discussion will encourage industry leaders to share their best practices and learn about current hot-button issues, with this first installment focusing on employment law and franchising.

Stuck in a rut? Feeling mentally drained? Dr. Heidi Hanna, performance coach and keynote speaker, will motivate you to use your brainpower and teach the critical components of brain performance at Athena San Diego’s Building Mental Capital event. The presentation will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at AMN Healthcare, 12400 High Bluff Drive.

The San Diego Taxpayers Association hosts a panel of experts discussing how school bond financing impacts school districts and taxpayers, why capital appreciation bonds are controversial, and if all bonds are created equal. Panelists include Eric Hall, president of Eric Hall & Associates; Dan McAllister, treasurer and tax collector for the County of San Diego; Tim Shaefer, founder and owner of Magis Advisors; and Dale Scott, president of Dale Scott and Company. The event will be at the Town and Country Hotel & Resort on 500 Hotel Circle North, from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday.

The Thomas Jefferson School of Law Center for Sports & Policy presents a “Gladiators in the 21st Century: Violence and Injuries in Athletics” conference on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The symposium will tackle the issue of the violence and injuries that pervade sports, and focus on finding solutions on the legal, medical, policy and cultural fronts. The keynote speaker for the event at 1155 Island Ave. will be sports agent Leigh Steinberg.

The U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress comes to the San Diego Convention Center Thursday, Nov. 8 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11. The educational meeting focuses on advances in mental health care, treatment strategies, and patient management and wellness.
