On the Agenda: First week of December brings a taste of the holidays

With three weeks until the official start of winter when the days finally start getting longer, take advantage of the last few weeks of fall and the decreasing sunlight to head indoors for some of San Diego’s business events. Construction management, real estate, holiday parties, environmental law -- take your pick.

To kick things off, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Good Government Series brings Sen. Michael Rubio to the chamber for a discussion about the California Environmental Quality Act and efforts to modernize the law. The discussion will be on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at 402 W. Broadway, Suite 1000.

For those wanting a double-dose of law on Tuesday, the Lawyers Club’s First Tuesday Balance Lunch Meeting will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Kramm & Associates Discovery Conference Center on 401 W. A St., Suite 750. There will be an interactive panel of attorneys discussing whether more flexibility and greater opportunities for work-life balance exist outside law firms. The discussion will be moderated by balance committee member Danielle Moore, an associate at Fisher & Phillips LLP.

The San Diego Better Business Bureau hosts its Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics on Tuesday at the Town and Country Resort Hotel on 500 Hotel Circle North. The annual awards honor outstanding local companies and nonprofits that demonstrate a commitment to ethical business practices. The luncheon begins at noon.

On Wednesday, the 2012 Global Connect Summit comes to the San Diego Marriott Del Mar. The annual two-day international meeting draws architects of some of the world’s leading innovation ecosystems along with visionaries who are growing clusters in emerging markets. This is an opportunity to work with colleagues from around the world to analyze innovative capital formation strategies and sustainable commercialization solutions. The Marriott Del Mar is at 11966 El Camino Real.

The Construction Management Association of America presents a County of San Diego Capital Program Update on Wednesday. The dinner discussion will present information about capital program updates, including how to do business with the county, construction delivery methods and the different departments within the program. Speakers include Ramin Abidi, construction program manager in the Department of Public Works; April Heinze, director of the Department of General Services; and Terry Rayback, program manager in the Department of Public Works. The event will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mission Valley Marriott on 8757 Rio San Diego Drive.

The Greater San Diego Association of Realtors presents its Holiday House Celebration on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. SDAR will be collecting new unwrapped toys, clothes, food and household items until that date to benefit San Diego’s children, military, homeless and senior citizens. Donations can also be brought to the celebration at The Driftwood in Olde Del Mar on 1930 Seaview Ave.

The Poway Chamber of Commerce will also host its Holiday Mixer on Thursday at the Brigantine Seafood restaurant. The fun runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 13445 Poway Road.

Haven’t had enough holiday cheer yet? Then head to the Urban Land Institute’s Holiday Party, also on Thursday, at 7894 Civita Blvd. The party will include a tour of the first for-sale residential neighborhood at Civita Origen in Mission Valley, as well as appetizers and drinks. The soiree runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Daily Transcript’s George Chamberlin will moderate the Institute of Real Estate Management San Diego Chapter’s Annual Economic Forecast Breakfast. Special guest Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, will grade her 2012 predictions and provide insight into future economic conditions globally and locally. A panel comprised of a cross-section of the real estate industry will also discuss their forecasts for 2013 considering the election results and the anticipated market dynamics and economic conditions. The event is on Friday from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on 333 W. Harbor Drive.

Also on Friday, Connect's Most Innovative New Product Awards will honor San Diego’s innovators along with the groundbreaking products launched in the last year. This is Connect's largest and most prestigious event, attracting more than 800 business leaders, researchers and capital providers. The awards will be held at the Hilton Torrey Pines on 10950 N. Torrey Pines Road from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The Advancing Ethical Research Conference 2012 will be held at the Convention Center from Tuesday to Thursday. The conference offers both in-depth and general sessions regarding human subjects research and consequent regulatory compliance, informed consent, conflicts of interest, stem cell research, genetics, multicenter trials and tissue banking.

The Advanstart CVC West conference will also be at the Convention Center from Thursday, Dec. 6 until Sunday, Dec. 9. Veterinarians, technicians and practice managers can partake in an array of specialized courses and labs.
