On The Agenda: jam-packed week of events

George Washington once wrote, “The views of men can only be known, or guessed at, by their words or actions." Honor the nation’s first president on this Presidents’ Day by listening to the words of fellow business leaders and take action by attending one of the following events this week.

Learn how estimators drive company success at the American Society of Professional Estimators’ (ASPE) event on Tuesday. Terry Kramer, certified management consultant and president of Kramer Management Consulting, will be the featured presenter at this month’s association meeting. The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Butcher Shop Steakhouse on 5255 Kearny Villa Road.

The San Diego Military Advisory Council’s breakfast meeting will be on Wednesday. Guest speaker will be Rear Adm. C. Forrest Faison III, commander of Navy Medicine West and commander of Naval Medical Center San Diego. The event runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Adm. Kidd Catering & Conference Center on 33050 Acoustic Ave.

The city of Escondido presents its State of the City address on Wednesday, presented by Mayor Sam Abed. George Chamberlin, executive editor at The Daily Transcript, will be the master of ceremonies. The event runs from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the California Center for the Arts on 340 N. Escondido Blvd. in Escondido.

ULI San Diego/Tijuana will assess downtown Carlsbad’s revitalization plan at its meeting on Wednesday. Presenters include Kristianne Kurner, executive artistic director of the New Village Arts; Drew Cady, deputy director of Art Pulse; Kathy Dodson, economic development manager for the city of Carlsbad; and Steve Gibson, president of Urban Place Consulting Inc. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the New Village Arts Theatre on 2787 State St. in Carlsbad.

Hear a construction update of The Green Build project at The American Society of Civil Engineers’ event on Wednesday. Keith Wilschetz, director of planning at the San Diego Regional Airport Authority, will present the status of improvements. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Best Western Seven Seas on 411 Hotel Circle South.

Shalini Kedia of Kedia Mediation will present the nuts and bolts of mediation at the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association’s meeting on Wednesday. The presentation will cover what mediators look for in mediation briefs, setting realistic expectations for clients regarding mediation outcomes, as well as the pros and cons of joint mediation sessions. The event starts at 6 p.m. at the San Diego County Bar Association on 401 W. A St.

The Southwestern College Facilities Master Plan Workshop is on Thursday. The workshop will outline the college’s draft Facilities Master Plan, which leverages its $389 million bond measure, Proposition R. The event runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Southwestern College/Student Union East on 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista.

The San Diego Center for International Trade Development presents a seminar on “The Border, Ports And Trade: Southern California And Global Markets” on Thursday. The seminar is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Commerce. It will feature information on regional and global trade opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers in the Southern California and Baja California regions. The event runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn by the Bay on 1355 N. Harbor Drive.

The Greater San Diego Association of Realtors’ Global Real Estate Council Mixer is on Thursday. The event will have light appetizers and drinks, accompanied by a presentation on the future of international business in today’s market. Steve Weathers, president and CEO of the World Trade Center San Diego, will be the guest speaker. The mixer runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fixtures – Visions for Living on 9340 Dowdy Drive, Suite 102.

The Urban Land Institute presents its Visionary Women in Real Estate Speaker’s Series on Thursday. Dale Steele and Catt White are undertaking this new project to feature San Diego’s signature market. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the San Diego Public Market on 1735 National Ave.

The Point Loma Nazarene University Fermanian School of Business 2013 Dealmakers of the Year Business Breakfast is on Friday. The annual breakfast will honor individuals, firms and collaborations that exemplify creativity, innovation and ethical practices that create long-term value for the business community in the San Diego region. The event runs from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Liberty Station Conference Center on 2600 Laning Drive.

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosts its Enlisted Recognition Dinner on Friday. The event, open to the public, will feature a dinner and an evening of celebration to recognize Marines and sailors who have been identified by their respective commands as top performers and contributors. The dinner runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the El Camino Country Club on 3202 Vista Way in Oceanside.
