Carlsbad’s ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) this week will start offering its Exede high-speed satellite Internet in Florida, offering what it describes as virtually unlimited data usage for communications, web browsing and streaming media.
Florida communities are among a number of limited markets in the U.S. where ViaSat is rolling out its Freedom Plan, providing at least 150 gigabytes of data per month without a strict data allowance.
"We're excited to demonstrate that satellite Internet can deliver data volumes that are competitive with wireline services," said Lisa Scalpone, ViaSat’s vice president for broadband services.
Mike Jude, program manager for consumer communication services at the Frost & Sullivan market research firm, said it was “very interesting ... to see (ViaSat) take another step ahead in responding to consumers' growing need for higher volumes of data."
ViaSat has also announced plans to launch a second satellite in 2016 to facilitate a significant expansion of Exede services, capacity, speed and coverage areas.
