Novatel Wireless appoints CFO

San Diego's Novatel Wireless Inc. (Nasdaq: NVTL) announced that Michael Newman has been appointed as executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Newman served in senior executive level positions at Websense Inc. over an 11-year span from 2002 to 2013, having served as CFO from 2011 to 2013, and in a variety of capacities, including general counsel and chief administrative officer from 2002-2011. Newman co-led the company's M&A activity, including the sale of Websense to a private-equity buyer in 2013.

Prior to Websense, Newman handled securities and corporate development matters in the legal department for Gateway Inc.

He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.S. in business administration from Georgetown University.

Tom Allen, who has served as the company's interim CFO since June 2014, will continue to provide consulting services to the company, including transition assistance to Newman.
