Cyber attacks rose 600% last year, study says

Cyber attacks have increased by nearly 600 percent over the past year, according to a report released Wednesday by Websense Security Labs, a research team of San Diego’s Websense Inc. (Nasdaq: WBSN), which produces security software for email and mobile communications.

The firm found that organizations faced an average of 1,719 attacks for every 1,000 users each week.

"These attacks were staged predominantly on legitimate sites and challenge traditional approaches to security and trust,” said Charles Renert, vice president of the Websense Security Labs. “The timed, targeted nature of these advanced threats indicates a new breed of sophisticated attacker who is intent on compromising increasingly higher-yield targets.”
