Visitor Information

Del Mar is a small seaside village bordered by saltwater lagoons and is a native habitat for the Torrey Pine, the rarest pine species in the Northern Hemisphere. Approximately 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego, it was first populated in 1882 when Southern California Railroad man Theodore Loop erected a tent city on the beach. Del Mar gets its name from Loop’s wife, Ella, who named the beach after a poem by Bayard Taylor, “The Fight on Paseo Del Mar.”

With a population of 4,261, Del Mar remains pedestrian-oriented and intimately scaled, a rustic village-in-the-woods best known for its world-class thoroughbred racetrack, county fair, shopping and restaurants.
