Business Information

University City owes its origins to UCSD, considered one of the top-ranked public research universities in the nation. UCSD is one of San Diego’s largest employers -- with some 28,600 full- and part-time employees as of June 2013 -- and business incubators. UCSD faculty, staff and alumni have reportedly spun off more than 150 local companies, including San Diego’s first biotechnology company, Hybritech.

UCSD’s own Thornton Hospital is in University City, as is Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
