LANDMARKS | GUAJOME COUNTY PARK & ADOBE | Map It

Guajome Adobe is an historic hacienda built in the 1850s for one of San Diego's early families. Originally the land belonged to Mission San Luis Rey and then to two Indians. The owners sold the land to Don Abel Stearns who gave it to his sister-in-law, Ysidora Bandini de Couts, as a wedding gift. Ysidora and her husband Cave Couts turned the rancho into the social center of northern San Diego County. The adobe was the site of many fiestas and was visited by the elite from all over the state.

The Cout's family remained in possession of the adobe until the 1970s, but it gradually fell into disrepair. It bacame a state park in the 1980s and has since been restored to much of its former splendor. It is now both a California and National Landmark. The house contains 28 rooms and guided tours take visitors through the site and tell its history.

The park that surrounds the adobe is made up of dry chaparralas well as spring-fed lakes and marsh lands that support numerous species of birds and other wildlife. It is a good bird-watching spot with approximately 186 species sited within its boundaries.
