Assemblyman and San Diego mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher has waded into the waters occupied by Congressman Bob Filner, releasing a plan to expand the Port of San Diego and the region’s maritime economy.

Unfortunately, the Planning Department latest area specific plan for Barrio Logan will reduce the area available for maritime support. The Planning Department wants to decrease industrial uses and increase commercial and residential uses including affordable housing. I hope that our next mayor can correct the actions of the present Planning Department. A significant part of the populace of Barrio Logan has been taught to equate industry and manufacturing with pollution, which need not be the case.
