As a paralegal with the San Diego County Counsel's Office of Juvenile Dependency Appellate Team, Denise Blassak assists in child protection matters. She handles legal research and writing assignments, in brief/writ responses and occasionally assists trial deputies with legal research and points and authorities.
Juvenile dependency was a brand new legal area for Blassak, and she spent her spare time familiarizing herself with problematic parts of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). She obtained federal updates on recent changes, and spoke with those skilled in the area. In her desire to learn the troublesome areas, she made herself a useful resource to staff members.
Prior to joining the County Counsel's Office, Blassak was a paralegal with the Law Offices of Stilp & Cotton, an in-house defense counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Wisconsin.
She is currently a voting member with the San Diego Paralegal Association, which allows her to keep in touch with matters affecting paralegals locally and nationwide. Charitable activities include meal service to the homeless, environmental project assistance and time as a crisis-line volunteer operator.
She earned a bachelor's degree as a multi-legal option paralegal in 1992 from Winona State University.
