These individuals are clearly seen as leaders in the firm, thinking creatively and strategically, seeing the big picture. Set standards that others follow. Are viewed by lawyers and staff as fair and ethical; do what’s best for the firm and have no personal agenda. Work with the partners/shareholders to develop the vision for the firm and manage the firm’s resources to the vision. Are consummate professionals and consistently strive for professional development and continuing education to stay apprised of the latest trends in the legal industry. Are viewed by staff as being a liaison with firm attorneys. These individuals participate in Community outreach. Must possess thorough and complete knowledge base and skills as relates to their leadership role and their position. Positions may include some or all of the knowledge base and skills outlined more clearly below.
Communication is at the core of these professionals’ success. They advise employees of the firm’s expectations, policies and procedures. They communicate the needs and concerns of the staff to the owners. They serve as the liaison between the firm and its clients. They share the needs and relationships with the business partners and discuss the welfare of the firm with its owners. They need to be good listeners, and act appropriately on what they hear in and about their firm.
These individuals should manage their firm in a way that allows the owners to practice law. While they must be very involved with the managing partner and/or management committee, knowledge and commitment to firm’s goals and objectives are essential. They follow the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the state. They ask for and respond to input regarding the management of the firms’ operations. They understand the facilities and technological needs and are able to provide strategic and tactical planning to address those needs. They understand the retention policies and requirements, as well as compliance periods, etc. regarding client files.
Legal management professionals must have a working knowledge of budgeting, terms, financial reporting, cash flow analysis and variance analysis. They work closely and confidentially with the bookkeepers, accountants and partners on a regular basis. While knowledge of the legal industry is imperative, experience managing the firm as a business is also critical. Effective planning techniques, motivational leadership styles and general business savvy are important.
Law office managers must have excellent interpersonal skills to deal with all aspect of Human Resources issues. From the interview process, through the orientation and training, to evaluation and performance counseling, and even the dismissal process, these individuals must deal fairly and respectfully with everyone. Good leaders will ensure employees are managed consistently and fairly, and make every effort to help people love their job, while doing their best. They must stay up to date on all federal, state and local employment-related regulations.

A great office environment allows a firm’s staff and attorneys to deliver their very best. Factors that impact a firm’s environment include welcoming surroundings, comfortable and ergonomic workspace, and a strong IT infrastructure.
Law firms are among the most active businesses in our community, and this deep community involvement is something the firms’ attorneys and staff can greatly benefit from. Community involvement can include commitment to pro bono work, advocacy of volunteerism, formal ties with charitable organizations, participation in mentoring and firm initiatives such as going green.
Nothing is more elemental in a law firm’s success than its integrity. Law firms exhibit integrity in communicating honestly with clients and opposing counsel, dealing responsibly with vendors and business partners and treating its employees with respect and dignity.
