This is the culmination of a peer voting process in which The Daily Transcript and the Association of Legal Administrators honor outstanding law firm management professionals and firms with the best office environment and culture.
Betty J. Murphy has been with the law firm of Levine Steinberg Miller & Huver since 1992 and acts as the office manager, bookkeeper and secretary to Harvey R. Levine. Her duties are numerous and varied. She assists Levine in his trial work including trial preparation and support. Most recently, she was involved in the cases of Foley v. City of Coronado (July 2008; $5.5 million settlement during trial) and Cisterra Partners v. The Irvine Co. (December 2006; $37.5 million verdict), wherein she aided in creating numerous graphics and exhibits, putting together trial notebooks, assisted in preparing juror questionnaires and completing various and numerous other trial support tasks.
Murphy also assists Levine with his legal work, coordinating all his travel and seminars, meetings, telephone conferences and event planning. She also helped produce a company called Litigation Skills Forum Inc. As director of operations she is responsible for putting together seminars, as well as the sale and distribution of educational video and audio tapes that assist attorneys in the practice of law.
Further, Murphy handles most employment issues and is the firm’s bookkeeper. Within the scope of her bookkeeping duties, she pays all bills, makes all deposits, prepares payroll and all associated returns, prepares all client disbursements, prepares financial statements and interfaces with the accountant in the preparation of tax returns. She is also responsible for the firm’s marketing and public relations, including but not limited to Web site information and updating, brochures, and is involved in the decision making for all promotional materials. She is responsible for maintaining and updating all the firm’s assets including insurance policies, computers and telephone system.
Murphy also founded and runs her own business, Murphy Bookkeeping Service, offering part-time bookkeeping for small and medium businesses such as Rainwaters Restaurant, Sundance Stage Lines, Medco Pharmacy, Crown Point Catering, and numerous law firms.
Previously she was the bookkeeper for Stutz, McCormick, Mitchell and Verlasky and Holt, Rhoades and Hollywood before that. She started her career at San Diego Trust and Savings, where she eventually became operations supervisor, in charge of the entire teller line and all behind-the-scenes operations involved with checking, savings and loan accounts.
Murphy was on the board of directors of the Alzheimer’s Association. She has successfully competed in a marathon and is currently training to participate in the 2009 Rock N’ Roll Marathon.
In addition to her career, Murphy is raising her niece Kaili, age 10, and her nephew Lu, age 16.
