Welcome to the Executive Profiles section of Point Loma Nazarene University's Master of Business Administration program. Featuring current graduates of the MBA as well as the members of the faculty, the intention is to provide the San Diego business community a convenient connecting point to the high quality individuals involved in the Point Loma Nazarene University MBA. As members of the Fermanian School of Business at PLNU, over 500 students are currently pursuing either undergraduate or graduate business degrees in both day and evening classes.

Professor José Muñoz has over 30 years of international executive experience in operating, financial, and administrative capacities in a variety of industries, including food processing, manufacturing, distribution, import-export, and seafood. Since 1981, he has been President of his own consulting firm, JÉM, Inc., which has been involved in general financial business planning, re-structuring, development, and operation of a number of projects in the USA, Mexico, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. He has an extensive range of experience with the following types of businesses: a) mature, larger corporations and entrepreneurial start-ups, b) domestic and international companies, c) turnarounds and re-structurings, and d) managing companies for growth. In the last 2 years, he has traveled and consulted in Peru, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Guam, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Hawaii, Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong.
He served as President and CEO of Van Camp Seafood Company (1988-1992), which at the time was the second largest tuna company in the USA with sales in excess of $300 million, producing dolphin-safe Chicken of the Sea® canned seafood products including tuna, salmon, and shellfish at its facilities in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Indonesia, and Thailand. Prior to that, he served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of BC Abalone (1992-2004), a Mexican company he co-founded, which was involved in aquaculture located in Baja California. Before that, he served in a variety of positions with Exxon Corporation, Zapata Corporation, Sun Harbor Industries, and Solar Turbines International.
He has over twelve years of teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate level in international business, accounting, and finance at Pt. Loma Nazarene University, National University, San Diego State University, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Richmond. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
He attended Florida State University, where he lettered in track and received a BS (1968) and MBA (1970) in Finance. He became a CPA in Texas in 1972. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Business at Anderson University (Indiana) and expects to earn a doctorate in 2010-11. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in 1971-1972 and received an honorable discharge with honors.
He and his wife Lindy have been married for 37 years with three daughters (Mary-UC-Santa Barbara, Rachel-Univ of Miami, and Sarah-Virginia Tech), and resides in San Diego, California.
He currently serves on several civic and corporate Boards of Directors, including the San Diego International Sports Council (for which he was Chairman in 1999). He has successfully competed in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii, has run over 15 marathons, and now competes in long-distance bicycle races.
