Dr. Bruce Schooling is the Dean of the School of Business at Point Loma Nazarene University and professor of management.
Dr. Schooling holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco, a Master of Nonprofit Administration degree from University of San Francisco, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Management from New Mexico State University. He was awarded an associated degree in Biblical Studies from Nazarene Bible College.
Named the International Teacher of the Year in 2003 by national accrediting body, ACBSP, his philosophy of education is anchored in a belief in the ability of people to be creative, enthusiastic, and capable of doing, learning, and exploring great things. Education is about students. They are the product of what an educator does. To be a good teacher Dr. Schooling believes he must bring great interest and passion to his subject. But students are found in different academic and experiential places and he believes it is the responsibility of the instructor to pick each one up and encourage them to travel, for a time, with him on the road of understanding the subject at hand.
Research interests are focused on the leadership/management of nonprofits, particularly churches, and how they can be more efficient. Of particular interest is how leaders can make a difference in the organizations they serve.
Thirteen year of consulting practice has helped a diverse array of organizations with future searches, organizational development, and change. In addition, leadership coaching has been a integral part of the practice, striving to move leaders toward successful transitions in organizational change.
During eighteen years of pastoral ministry Dr. Schooling served as senior pastor of three Nazarene Churches in Texas, Idaho, and California. He has served on many district boards and worked in various youth camps.
Dr. Schooling and his wife Linda live in San Diego and have two adult daughters. Besides family, Dr. Schooling’s interests beyond teaching and organizations include athletics, especially basketball, reading, and motorcycling.
