The nature of my practice is directed to major corporations, startup businesses and individuals as it relates to prosecution, litigation and counseling. My clients have included: Pro-Kennex, Asics, Whalen Furniture, Walz Postal, BanCorp, San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, Gary Sutton, David Criswell and San Diego State University. Litigation matters include: Weeks v. Deal-A-Meal, Mercedes v. Feuling, Crabtree v. Medieval Metal, Max Rack v. Hoist and Pla-Cor v. Construction Technologies.

Professional Background

I hold a bachelor’s of science degree and a master’s of science degree in physics, both from San Diego State University. I hold a juris doctorate degree from University of San Diego. I started as a sole practitioner, then started the small firm of Haller and Harshman. I then joined the patent firm of Brown, Martin, Haller and McClain and I am now the Intellectual Property Group Leader for Gordon & Rees.

I am a member of the California State Bar Association and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. I have been admitted to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. I am a member of the American Bar Association, Intellectual Property Section; the San Diego Intellectual Property Association (Past President); and the Federal Bar Association.

Personal Affiliations

Over the years I have been affiliated with the local social organization, the San Diego Forum. Recently I have been trying to re-establish my relationship with San Diego State University and was the organizing President of the Science and Engineering Deans Advisory Board.

Personal Background

I have lived in San Diego for 44years. I have been married for 40 years to my high school girlfriend, Judith L. Haller. We have two married children, Jori and Michael Petersen, and John and Jodi Haller. I worked as a Systems Engineer for Logicon, a small government contractor, while attending law school at night at USD. I enjoy a small and curious collection (15 pieces) of U.S. Patent Office Patent Models.
