It is the culmination of a lengthy peer voting process that began in February with the announcement of a call for nominations. San Diego County lawyers were asked who among their peers -- with whom they had professional experience -- were worthy of recognition.
Education Law School/Year: California Western School of Law, 1993 College/Year: CSU-Sacramento 1990 Bar Admissions California; U.S. District Court, Southern District of California Practice Areas Criminal Law, Discrimination & Civil Rights, Drunk Driving Major Cases I was the first attorney in San Diego to successfully recuse the San Diego City Attorney’s Criminal Division in People v. Duncan. Over the last three years, I have successfully resolved three complex Mexican Mafia cases involving multiple murders, conspiracy, kidnapping and assault with deadly weapons (People v. I recently obtained a not guilty verdict on an assault with a deadly weapon charge wherein the defendant was captured on jail video attacking another inmate with a mop (People v. Esquera). I am currently involved in active trial preparation on three complex homicide cases and am pending trial in a variety of serious felony matters throughout Southern California. Professional Background While in law school, I was employed as a clerk with the San Diego County Public Defender’s Office from 1992-1993. After being admitted to the bar in 1993, I worked as an attorney in the San Diego County Public Defender’s Office from 1993-2002. In 2002, I left that office and opened the Law Offices of Stephen G. Cline, which handled serious criminal and civil rights litigation. In 2004, national attorney rating service Martindale-Hubbell honored me with its highest rating after it determined that I had demonstrated “pre-eminent legal ability.” I then joined Nimmo Law in 2006 where I work with criminal law icon William Nimmo on serious and/or complex criminal litigation throughout Southern California. Professional Affiliations I am a member of both the California Public Defender’s Association and San Diego County Bar Association. I have worked with the SDCBA’s Private Conflicts Counsel Program since 2002. I have personally supervised two interns per year through California Western School of Law since 2003. And since 2004, I have served as the league commissioner for the SDCBA’s co-ed softball league. Personal Affiliations Although I have worked very hard to get to this point in my career, it would not have been possible if I had not been blessed with guidance from a myriad of amazing attorneys such as Richard Gates, Juliana Humphries, William Trainor, Gary Gibson, Gary Nichols and Michael Roake.
