It is the culmination of a lengthy peer voting process that began in February with the announcement of a call for nominations. San Diego County lawyers were asked who among their peers -- with whom they had professional experience -- were worthy of recognition.
Education Law School/Year: J.D., University of San Diego Other Graduate School/Year: M.A., San Diego State University College/Year: B.A., Wayne State University (Detroit, Mich.) Bar Admissions California Practice Areas Alternative Dispute Resolution, Appellate, Discrimination & Civil Rights, Juvenile Major Cases My most recent significant success was last December, when we won a 4th District Court of Appeals reversal of an adverse San Diego Superior Court child custody decision. The decision was reversed because the appellate court ruled that the trial court had not properly applied a statutory presumption or made required statutory findings. In addition, we have had one recent case where the wife contended that the parties separated 12 years ago and husband contended that the parties separated last year. We represented wife and won a ruling that the 12 year separation was correct. Professional Background I have been practicing law for more than 20 years. I began my career at Fletcher, Heald and Hildreth in Washington, D.C., practicing administrative law before federal government agencies. Upon returning to San Diego, I practiced in a variety of legal areas, settling eventually in family law and alternative dispute resolution. I passed the Certified Specialist Exam in 2001 and was certified by the California State Board of Legal Certification shortly thereafter. The National Dispute Resolution Center credentialed me as a mediator in 2002 and I have been a mediator since 1995. Professional Affiliations I am currently a Vice President of the San Diego County Bar Association and I also served as a Vice President of the Board in 1998. I have been a Director of the County Bar for six years and produced its centennial anniversary videotape “100 Years of Justice,” which aired on local cable during the bar’s centennial year of 1999. I was President of the Foothills Bar Association in 2003. I have been a Temporary Judge since 1995. I was a Director of Lawyers Club. I have been a frequent CLE lecturer and Adjunct Professor of Law. Personal Affiliations Because I have a pre-law background in media, I have tried to find ways to usefully overlap legal practice with communications. Both my undergraduate degree and my Masters Degree from SDSU are in media, and before I became a lawyer I worked at various times for NBC, ABC, CBS and PBS. One place where my media and legal backgrounds overlap is my frequent appearances on Sunday mornings on KFMB-AM talking about legal issues on the radio. I coordinate the “Ask-A-Lawyer” program on KNSD-TV. I have been frequently published and was Executive Editor of the Law Review at USD. Personal Background When in high school, we made a list of career aspirations. I listed four possibilities lawyer, TV/radio performer, minister or professor. Years passed before I again saw that list. It amused me to see that I am doing all of them. I have been a lawyer for more than 20 years. I am regularly on the radio and will be regularly on television soon. I have been for many years a “Minister of the Word” in my church, which means that I regularly read from scripture from the pulpit. I have been for several years an Adjunct Professor of Law at a local law school.
