Jason Ross is an associate in the employment and business litigation practice group at Higgs, Fletcher & Mack LLP. Before being named a finalist for this year’s award, Ross was a prior two-time nominee for <I>The Daily Transcript</I>’s Young Attorneys Award.
Ross’ practice mainly involves defending businesses and employers of all sizes in complex business, employment, class-action and real estate litigation in state and federal court, as well as administrative proceedings such as those before the Fair Employment and Housing Commission. His main focus in recent years has been employment litigation, largely defending wrongful termination, trade secret, discrimination, unfair competition, harassment, defamation and breach of contract claims. However, he also prides himself on his versatility, and he has successfully handled medical malpractice, products liability, personal injury and real estate litigation, as well as preference and fraudulent transfer actions in bankruptcy matters. Ross has also worked on appeals/writs in the California Court of Appeal and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ross’ recent successes include helping to procure a published appellate opinion (his first) on a writ to the California Second Circuit Court of Appeal in an employment discrimination case brought under the California Military & Veterans Code. He also recently obtained a $3.45 million settlement for his client as part of a two-attorney team in a complex real property dispute against a major U.S. bank. Additionally, in opposition to a summary judgment motion, Ross recently convinced the court to enter summary judgment in favor of his client in a fraudulent transfer action in bankruptcy court.
Involved in the community, Ross is on the board of directors for the Downtown YMCA and is also a member of the American Inns of Court, Enright Chapter, the San Diego County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Furthermore, he provides pro bono legal counsel for high school student-athletes in administrative appeals against the California Interscholastic Federation.
Prior to entering practice, Ross graduated from Columbia University, where he earned Dean’s List recognition, played varsity football and served as associate sports editor for the <I>Columbia Daily Spectator</I>. Before law school, he worked in New York City as a litigation paralegal at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. He obtained his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law. At USD he was appointed to the <I>San Diego Law Review</I>, earned his section’s Best Brief Award, and was named to the legal honors fraternity Phi Delta Phi. Ross has externed for Justice Terry O’Rourke in the 4th District, Division One, California Court of Appeal; Judge Ronald S. Prager at the San Diego County Superior Court; and Judge Barry T. Moskowitz at the United States District Court, Southern District of California.
