Senior coalition forms

Senior Community Centers has launched Seniors First San Diego, an initiative to combat ageism, promote positive depictions of aging and engage seniors to become advocates.

A collaboration of Senior Community Centers and the Leichtag Family Foundation, the initiative is building a coalition of seniors, people who care about seniors and organizations throughout San Diego County that will be the “voice” for seniors with selected officials, the media and the broader community. Within their first year, the goal is to train hundreds of San Diego County residents, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to become advocates in their communities.

“Our workshops gives attendees the tools and motivation to navigate the legislative system and work with elected officials to effectively make their voice heard on senior issues related to ageism, nutrition, affordable housing, senior abuse, social security and much more, said Christina Griffith, senior advocacy coordinator, Senior Community Centers.

In addition to coordinating workshops, the campaign will also carry its message through social networking channels, which will be a source of information on care giving, entitlement benefits such as social security, Medicare and other important information.
