UBS is a global banking leader with offices all over the world. But in the United States, the company ranks around third compared to competitors. To win the war for more clients, according to the director of the San Diego branch, UBS must first win the war for talent.

"We need to meet the needs of the local market," explained branch director Daniel Banks. To do that, "we take the best talent with an understanding of the local market. At a value added level, that puts us well above the competition in this market."

To attract the best talent, UBS offers what most high finance institutions offer, like big salaries, good benefits, stock options and offices with scenic views, Banks said. But more than that, the company aims to offer an entrepreneurial spirit. UBS has an open platform, meaning employees are encouraged to use different products and techniques when working with a client, developing their own style. The bank has found this helps generate better relationships with its clients.
