During the business day, Tom Brown serves as president of one of Southern California's largest general engineering firms, Vista-based Sierra Pacific West Inc. Yet some of his most important work is done out of the office, in his spare time.
Brown, a previous Associated General Contractors San Diego (AGC) president, currently volunteers as chairman of the AGC Apprenticeship & Training Trust.
The state-approved program trains apprentices to become skilled construction workers, as the industry faces a shortage of skilled craftspeople.
During the past year, Brown has been instrumental in guiding the program, which is currently teaching 775 apprentices at its three training centers throughout Southern California.
