Alan Baca, a vice president of Jones Lang LaSalle, credits his eight-year tenure in the Navy with teaching the leadership skills that are still informing his role as a commercial real estate broker.
"I don't know any other organization in the world besides the military that will take someone who is 22 years old and tell them, 'OK, you're in charge of 25 people and all the communications on board the ship -- and if anything breaks it's your fault. Go figure it out,'" Baca said. "The Navy gives you some training, but they put you in situations where you have to be a leader from the beginning. It helps you be able to understand different motivators for people, and to understand how people think and to motivate so many types of personalities to get work done."
