For San Diego’s biotech startups, intellectual property lawyers like Leonard Svensson, a partner with Birch, Stewart, Kolasch, Birch (BSKB), can be as essential as investors. In fact, strong patents help secure funding.
“Say a startup company or relatively young company, particularly in life science or biotech, if they want to eventually be able to raise money, one of the key issues for potential investors is whether they have patent protection on the technology they’re developing,” Svensson said. “If they don’t have that, no one wants to invest good money because others can take that (technology).”
Svensson, who has been in the industry 30 years, moved here just over a decade ago to open BSKB’s San Diego office. He initially began in biomedical research, and most of his colleagues have backgrounds in the life sciences as well.
