Scott Huennekens is carefully balanced on a rock in the middle of a man-made pond, playfully striking a pose for a newspaper photographer. It's a precarious place to be: he could land in the drink at any moment, as employees pass by or look out from plate-glass windows on the Carmel Valley high-rise building that houses Volcano Corp.'s corporate headquarters.
Huennekens jokes that his strengths as president and chief executive officer of Volcano are first, his modeling skills, and second, "Being 11 years old." He was the medical device company's 11th employee; nearly a decade since its inception, Volcano now boasts 1,200 personnel worldwide. One of the company's core values has always been to "have fun," whether that means a willingness to laugh at yourself or the ambition to take on new challenges, he said.
"I think the main thing I've done is create a culture where people can be successful, and have fun doing it," he said. "Balance is important. We play hard, but we're very competitive."
