The wind turbines made by Helix Wind in San Diego's Barrio Logan neighborhood don't look like the giant windmills that have come to define the industry. Helix Wind's turbines, which can be used for residential or commercial power, have a spiral design, like the inside of a seashell, or as the company name suggests, like the DNA double helix. "The basic underlying principals of our turbine have been around for 100 years," said Ian Gardner, the chief executive of Helix Wind. "We've simply tweaked the design to make it cost effective and durable and aesthetically pleasing."
