Being a leader comes naturally to Robert Valderrama. He was in a club called the "sociables" at Sweetwater High School, where he was chosen as the president amongst all his peers.

"It was something that I always migrated to, a leadership role," he said. "Everything that I have got involved in, it seemed that I became the leader of that organization."

Valderrama has held leadership roles with various groups and locally appointed positions, like director at the San Diego County Water Authority Board and the chairman of the board at the San Diego Construction Council. But he has seemed to leave his mark in National City, where he grew up and has served on various committees within the city.

Patricia Prado Olmos, California State University San Marcos

As the youngest of five children growing up in a traditional Latino home in El Monte, Calif., Patricia Prado-Olmos was raised in a supportive and nurturing environment and taught the value of a good education. Throughout her career as an educator and in her current position as vice president of the Division of Community Engagement for California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), she has helped create a similar supportive and nurturing environment for students and the conditions to help them succeed in their educational endeavors.
