This update provides the latest news as to the activities and issues that SDMAC has been addressing over the last few months, legislation that SDMAC has been tracking, membership news, calendar of events, and other information.   

Don't miss attending this year's Coronado Speed Festival on Sept. 26-27, 2009. The Festival is Fleet Week San Diego's marquee event and features fast-paced, thrilling auto racing and exhibitions for car enthusiasts of all ages at Naval Air Station, North Island.  

Successful organizations are comprised of individuals who are relationship driven.  

At a hearing before the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board (SDRWQCB) held on Aug. 12, the Board voted 5-2 against granting a permit for Storm Water Runoff at Naval Base San Diego, which would have imposed a toxicity limit which the Navy has contended would be impossible to achieve.  

With Rear Admiral Len Hering’s retirement from the Navy rapidly approaching, SDMAC’s members and guests gathered at the July monthly breakfast meeting to hear his comments about the Navy and its impact to the San Diego region.  

In the June Newsletter, we reported that SDMAC had entered into negotiations with Export Access, the graduate student organization at UCSD, to produce an updated report to the SDMAC 2008 Military Economic Impact Study.  

The Board of Directors has approved opening SDMAC membership to students enrolled in local two-year and four-year colleges and universities. This new membership category will be free to the students so long as they remain students in good standing at their schools.  

Members and guests attending the June 18th SDMAC breakfast meeting were treated to an indepth review of what Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) is all about by Rear Admiral Christopher Mossey.  

If you asked what assets the Eleventh Coast Guard District possessed, Rear Admiral Paul Zukunft would tell you: 13 SAR stations; 14 cutters augmented by frigates; 2 buoy tenders; 2 ice breakers; five air stations; one LORAN C station; 2,500 active duty personnel; property in California, Arizona, Nevada,and Utah; and 3,500 volunteers in the Coast Guard Auxiliary serving on the lakes and waterways of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. Similar assets are proportionately deployed in the Pacific Northwest, along the East Coast, and the Gulf Coast.  

During the April breakfast meeting, Earl Wederbrook, Co-chair of the Bases and Infrastructure Issue Group, provided a comprehensive update as to Group’s mission and activities.  

SDMAC has started the ball rolling to update our highly successful 2008 San Diego Military Economic Impact Study.  

SDMAC members and guests gathered at the May 20, 2009, breakfast meeting to hear Rear Admiral Alan B. "Brad" Hicks speak about the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense and Missile Defense Agency.
