Five outstanding San Diego County high school graduates have launched their careers in the construction industry thanks to scholarships awarded by a new program established by the Associated Builders and Contractors San Diego Apprenticeship Training Trust. The Associated Builders and Contractors chapters nationwide, including San Diego, have joined the Construction Coalition for a Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace (CCDAFW) program. Working along with various construction trade associations, the goal is to improve safety for all workers by eliminating injuries and fatalities that occur as a result of substance abuse-related incidents.

Bergelectricís diversity boosts the bottom line

Thirty-thousand veterans complete their military service in California each year, but only 25 percent of them find civilian employment. Although the White House recently unveiled a plan to lower the veteran unemployment rate, Frank Boecker, human resources director at Bergelectric and himself a military veteran, decided he couldn’t wait for someone else to put together a program to help vets find employment. Five years ago, he and Bergelectric decided to do something about it and started recruiting veterans as employees. When business picked up in 2010, he set a goal of hiring one veteran per week.
